FAMILY THEME: CONSEQUENCES


SHOCK AND AWE


2 Kings 24:1 - 25:21

The people of Judah learn a painful lesson: actions have
consequences.

1.  God Does Not Overlook Our Shameless, Unrepentant Sin
     (2 Kings 24:1-7)
     After centuries of disobedience, God had enough.
 
2.  Sin Can Cause Us to Lose Everything
     (2 Kings 24:8-20)
     The consequences of sin are more than we want to pay.
 
3.  There's No Escaping the Consequences of Rebelling Against God
     (2 Kings 25:1-21)
     The people of Judah found no escape from the consequences
     of their rebellion.

FAMILY THEME: REVIVAL


WHEN CHANGE IS GOOD


2 Kings 22: - 23:3

Israel experiences a revival after a period of spiritual decline.

1.  Revival is Sparked by God's Word
     (2 Kings 22:1-13)
     Hilkiah discovered a treasure, the book of the law, when they
     restored the temple.
 
2.  Revival Begins With Repentant Hearts
     (2 Kings 22:14-20)
     God said judgment would come, but not during Josiah's lifetime.
 
3.  Revival Results in a Change of Heart and Habits
     (2 Kings 23:1-30)
     Josiah made major reforms and turned the nation back to the
     ways of the Lord.

FAMILY THEME: JUDGMENT


HIM, AND HIM ALONE


2 Kings 17

God's people face judgment for their sin.

1.  God Allowed Judgment Because of Israel's Sin and Idolatry
     (2 Kings 17:1-12)
     The people ignored God's warnings, rejected His Law and so
     they suffered His judgment.
 
2.  God Gives Chances to Repent Before Bringing Judgment
     (2 Kings 17:13-23)
     God did not give up on His people but called them to return
     to Him.
 
3.  God Will Not Share Our Worship
     (2 Kings 17:24-41)
     God alone is worthy of worship and He will not share His
     glory with others.

FAMILY THEME: JUSTICE


NO ESCAPING JUSTICE


2 Kings 9 

God's judgment falls on the familyof Ahab.

1.  Justice Sometimes Requires Tough Action
     (2 Kings 9:1-13)
     In order to bring about justice, God may have to take some
     extreme measures. Case in point: the household of Ahab.
 
2.  Sin Leads to Conflict
     (2 Kings 9:14-22)
     The sins of Jezebel, Joram, and Ahaziah ensured there 
     would be no peace. God could not sit idle after what they
     had done.
 
3.  God Will Bring Justice to Bear Where There is Sin
     (2 Kings 9:23-37)
    Whether justice is carried out in this life or in eternity, we
     can be sure that God will bring it to pass.

FAMILY THEME: OBEDIENCE


IT WON'T ALWAYS MAKE SENSE


2 Kings 5 

Naaman is cured of leprosy in a most unusual manner.

1.  God Can Use the Lowly to Do What Kings Cannot
     (2 Kings 5:1-8)
     The Hebrew girl had greater faith than a king and God
     used her simple message.
 
2.  God's Methods are Best, Even if They Seem Strange to Us
     (2 Kings 5:9-14)
     God wants people to obey, even when it does not seem
     to make sense.
 
3.  We Should Not Desire Glory or Reward for Obedience
     (2 Kings 5:15-27)
    Gehazi saw an opportunity to profit from what god had done,
     chased Naaman down, and lied.

FAMILY THEME: POWER OF GOD


POWER FOR ANY SITUATION


2 Kings 2 

Elisha replaces Elijah as Israel's chief prophet.

1.  God Empowers Us to Put Others First
     (2 Kings 2:1-7)
     Elisha would soon replace Elijah, but as long as
     Elijah was around, Elisha was his servant.
 
2.  God Has Power Over Nature and Death
     (2 Kings 2:8-22)
     The power comes from God and not a prophet.
 
3.  God Has Power to Protect His People
     (2 Kings 2:23-25)
    God protected Elisha from those who might seek
     to harm him.

FAMILY THEME: FAITHFULNESS


YOU CAN COUNT ON IT


1 Kings 18:1 - 19:18 

The prophet Elijah takes on the prophets of Baal.

1.  God is Faithful When We Face Opposition
     (1 Kings 18:1-40)
     God faithfully proved that He is the true God.
 
2.  God Faithfully Keeps His Word
     (1 Kings 18:40-46)
     God had faithfuly kept His word to withhold rain
     and He kept His word to send rain.
 
3.  God is Faithful to Encourage His People in Times
     of Need
     (1 Kings 19:1-18)
    God worked powerfully, yet patiently, to bring the
     prophet back to obedience.
