FAMILY THEME: DEVOTION

HIS WAY...ALWAYS

II Samuel 6:1-19; 7:1-29
It's easy to excuse cutting corners, especially when your
motives are good. But, David found out the hard way that
we must do God's work in God's way.

1.  We Must Approach God With Holy Reverence
     (II Samuel 6:1-11)
David tried unsuccessfully to bring the ark of the
     covenant into Jerusalem.

2.  We Should Praise God With Celebration and Joy
     (II Samuel 6:12-19)
David and the people rejoiced as the ark finally
     came into Jerusalem.

3.  We Must Work for God Within The Boundaries of
     His Will
     (II Samuel 7:1-17)
We must submit our desires to the will of God.

4.  God's Plan Should Be Met With Humble Thanksgiving.
     (II Samuel 7:18-29)
The only rightful response to God's goodness was
     thanksgiving.

FAMILY THEME: PROVIDENCE

HIS WILL...HIS PROVISION

II Samuel 2:1-7; 5:1-10
David's ascension to the throne was a long and drawn-out
process. But God's providential hand could be seen every
step of the way.

1.  God Directs the Steps of His People
     (II Samuel 2:1-7)
It had been many years since Samuel first anointed
David as Saul's successor, but the shepherd boy
became king according to God's timetable.

2.  God Keeps His Promises
     (II Samuel 5:1-5)
God's promise to David finally came to pass.

3.  God Empowers His Chosen Servants
     (II Samuel 5:6-10)
David established Jerusalem as his capital city.

FAMILY THEME: FRIENDSHIP

A FAITHFUL FRIEND

I Samuel 20
There is perhaps no greater story of friendship in the
Bible than that of Jonathan and David. Their unlikely
friendship shows us what a faithful friendship looks like.

1.  True Friends Listen and Respond
     (I Samuel 20:1-15)
While Jonathan did not believe Saul wanted to
kill David, he listened and helped his friend
     develop a plan of action.

2.  True Friends Love Selflessly
     (I Samuel 20:16-17)
Jonathan was not just on David's side; he was
     against David's enemies too.

3.  True Friends Defend and Support One Another
     (I Samuel 20:19-42)
Saul's actions demonstrated that David would
would never be safe in the king's presence.

FAMILY THEME: JEALOUSY

JEALOUSY: THE DANGER ZONE

I Samuel 18:1-21;   19:1-18
Saul was still Israel's king, but he was far from God, as
illustrated in his attitude toward David.

1.  Jealousy Fuels Fear
     (I Samuel 18:1-9)
Saul's jealousy caused him to have an irrational
fear of David - the young man who had never
     mistreated or disrespected the King.

2.  Jealousy Gives Birth to Hateful Action
     (I Samuel 18:10-21)
Saul's jealousy led him to plot against David in
     an effort to kill him.

3.  Jealousy is No Match for Love
     (I Samuel 19:1-18)
Those who loved David did what they could to
     help him escape Saul's assaults.
