FAMILY THEME: HONORING GOD WITH OUR DEVOTION

James 4:1-4 ; Luke 14:26 ; Acts 12:20-23 ;

1 Peter 2:17 ; Matt. 22:34-40

God alone deserves complete and unconditional devotion.

1.  Be Devoted to God More Than to Any Desire, Pleasure,
     Person, or Thing

     (James 4:1-4 ; Acts 12:20-23)

Pursuit of the things of the world promises much but
     delivers little.

2.  Practice Total Devotion - First to God, Then to Others

     (Matthew 22:34-40)

Devotion is first and foremost an act of love.

3.  Our Devotion to Christ is to Be Far Greater Than Even
     Our Devotion to Our Family

     (Luke 14:26)

The best thing we can do for our family is to be wholly
     devoted to Jesus.

FAMILY THEME: HONORING GOD WITH OUR TIME

1 Peter 4:8-11 ; Ephesians 5:15-17 ; 6:5-8

We all have been given time and talents as gifts from God.
We are to use them to bring Him glory.

1.  Use Time to Serve God and Others, Bringing Glory to God

     (1 Peter 4:8-11)

God has equipped every believer to serve Him by serving
     others.

2.  Make the Best Use of Our Time in Accordance with God's Will

     (Ephesians 5:15-17)

Paul instructed the Ephesians to live wisely and intentionally.

3.  Use Time to Do the Will of God Wholeheartedly

     (Ephesians 6:5-8)

Paul instructed Christian slaves to serve with respect and
     sincerity, as unto the Lord.

FAMILY THEME: HONORING GOD WITH OUR TREASURE

Colossians 3:5 ; 1 John 2:15 ; 1 Timothy 6:10 ;                                     Matthew 6:24-33 ; Deuteronomy 5:7-9

Money and possessions call to us and offer to make us
feel good and take pride in them. Money and possessions
can quickly become idols.

1.  Worshiping the Good Things of Life is Idolatry

     (Colossians 3:5 ; 1 John 2:15-16)

God blesses us with good things, but we must guard
against worshiping the gifts rather than the Giver.

2.  Love of Money is the First Step Toward All Kinds of Sin

     (1 Timothy 6:10)

Honestly evaluating our use of money in light of the
demands of Christ is an important step toward
     living a Christ-centered life.

3.  Seek God's Kingdom and His Righteousness First for
     Yourself and Others

     (Matthew 6:24-33)

God knows what we need and promises to provide it.

FAMILY THEME: THE PROBLEM WITH IDOLATRY

Deuteronomy 5:7-9;  1 John 5:21;  1 Corinthians 10:14

Humans are wired to worship. However, not all objects of
worship are equally valid.

1.  Worship God, and God Alone

     (Deuteronomy 5:7-9)

To worship is to demonstrate worthiness. Only God is
worthy of the devotion that is shown though worship.

2.  The True and Living God is the Only One Worthy of Worship

     (1 John 5:21)

Idolatry isn't merely bowing down before a carved image.
Idolatry can also be taking a good thing and making it a
     god thing.

3.  Do Whatever is Necessary to Avoid Idolatry

     (1 Corinthians 10:14)

Rather than seeing how close we can get to idolatry
without crossing the line, we are instructed to see how
far away from it we can get.
